About

The Resident Evil franchise started on the Playstation One- console back in 1996. After numerous sequels it was bound to have a movie made out of it. Many dedicated fans were against making the movie because usually a movie made out of a game would be really bad.

Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Alien vs. Predator) took up the challenge and started working on Resident Evil The Movie back in 2000. He both wrote and directed it and rather than making a movie directly out of a game, he took the elements (like Raccoon City, the T-Virus, zombies and other monsters) and implented them into a separate and independent storyline. He chose Milla Jovovich in the leading role which stirred up conversations in the RE- community. A supermodel for the leading role in a horror-movie?

After the first trailer was released everything seemed promising. The movie looked stylish and maybe even a bit scary. After the film got released it separated the fans into two groups. The other group liked the movie and cherished it as a piece of the Resident Evil- universe, the other despised it however and would have wanted Anderson’s head on a plate for misusing the RE-elements.

As a Resident Evil movie it does half a decent job however. It has a good setting and storyline but the overpacked action and tempo of the movie makes it more of a sci-fi action movie rather than a horror- movie.

The sequel, “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” was released in Fall 2004.
