Resident Evil was originally released on the Playstation(TM) console back in 1996. It spawned a new genre of gaming (although Alone In The Dark had done something similiar before) which got the name Survival Horror. In Resident Evil the main point was to survive, you were outnumbered and always short of vital supplies like ammunition and health items. Resident Evil also brought a scare factor into games unlike before. Shocking moments which would send your heart pounding and your controller flying across the room. A frequent change of pants was nothing unusual when playing this game. Resident Evil also spawned numerous sequels, prequels and semi-sequels which proved as popular as the first, at least in the fan-base of the RE-saga
